Insights EU Council of Ministers approves adequacy decision for the UK

Last week the EU Council of Ministers approved an adequacy decision for the UK, and according to one report the decision was unanimous. The European Commission will now be able to adopt the decision that will enable the free flow of personal data from the EU to the UK to continue. The European Parliament recently rejected an adequacy decision on the grounds that the UK’s laws do not conform with GDPR, although the decision was non-binding. The Commission has said that any decision would be reviewed if there is any future change to UK privacy laws. Full details are expected shortly, but for brief details click here.
